Why does construction with structural wood require a different design process?
Features, economic feasibility and teamwork
Construction with structural timber differs from other construction methods (such as concrete, masonry or steel) in that it requires a clear pre-preparation of its individual stages. Walls, ceilings and roof elements are manufactured in advance in woodworking factories as prefabricated elements or modules, including installations and interior finishing. The assembly of the prefabricated structure for single-family houses usually takes 1–2 days.
Construction with structural timber is a method in which contractors must actively participate and provide their experience and input already in the design process, especially in the production of elements in factory conditions. In this type of construction, contractors are necessarily involved in the design process (architecture and construction).
For the smooth and optimal flow of the design and implementation processes, the usual practice of dividing the stages (design, tendering, production, delivery and installation) represents a significant obstacle. This is due to the fact that competence in the field of structural timber construction is often included too late.
For cost-effective implementation (with minimal changes), specific aspects of timber construction related to the design and production of the elements must be taken into account even in the preliminary design phase.
Even more than with other construction methods, timber construction must be implemented by a permanent design and implementation team. Due to the pre-fabrication of the elements, this type of construction requires a planning process, which is also what the BIM method strives for: all designers and contractors come together “at the same table” at an early stage to plan everything comprehensively before the production and installation of the elements begin.
Due to the machine cutting and manufacturing of elements on CNC machines, planners (architects, designers and engineers) must be very familiar with and take into account the production capabilities of the specific manufacturer or attract the necessary expertise in the field of construction with structural wood.
